Deflection Rate — The Metric That Justifies Your AI Agent Budget
Track what percentage of conversations the AI resolved without human escalation, and translate that directly into estimated cost savings. The one number that answers 'is this worth it?'
Most AI agent dashboards show you the same things: messages sent, sessions started, thumbs up, thumbs down. These are activity metrics. They tell you the agent is being used. They don't tell you whether it's worth paying for.
Deflection rate does.
What is deflection rate?
A deflected conversation is one where a user got the answer they needed from the AI — without escalating to a human, without submitting a support ticket, without sending an email.
Deflection rate is the percentage of conversations that end this way. If 100 users chat with your agent and 73 of them leave satisfied without contacting support, your deflection rate is 73%.
That number translates directly into cost savings. Industry estimates put the average cost of a human-handled support interaction between $8 and $15. Every conversation your agent deflects is a conversation your support team didn't have to handle.
How Companin measures it
Companin tracks three signals to classify a session as deflected or not:
Escalated: The user explicitly requested human help or left a negative feedback rating.
Abandoned: The user stopped the conversation without a clear resolution. These are flagged as uncertain.
Resolved: The conversation ended without escalation, the user received at least one confident response, and no negative feedback was given. This is a deflection.
The dashboard shows your deflection rate as a percentage trending over time, alongside an estimated cost savings figure based on a configurable per-ticket cost.
Using it to prove ROI
A 70% deflection rate on 500 monthly conversations means approximately 350 tickets your support team didn't handle. At $10 each, that's $3,500/month in avoided cost. These numbers are on your dashboard. No spreadsheet required.
